Barrel, Angie Peterson

End Table, Diana May

Raku and other ceramic works by artists Angie Peterson and Diana May will be featured in a special exhibit opening at the Opera House Gallery of Contemporary Art in Delphi on Thursday, November 5. Well-known in the Lafayette arts scene, Angie Peterson has been learning the craft of ceramics for more than two decades. She now teaches at the Morton Center in West Lafayette where she took her first lesson twenty years ago and where she "fell in love with the first spin of the wheel." Diana May started working with clay while in high school in Lafayette and then studied it at Oakland Community College near Detroit. A minor in business and accounting led to a profession while in the back of her mind she knew she "would find clay again." Twenty years later, with the support of her husband and children, she launched Muddog Pottery, creating functional and sculptural art using clay.
"Spotlight on Ceramics" is the first in a series of special exhibits planned at the Opera House Gallery for the coming year--each focusing on a different medium or type of art. Following a jurying process, artists for the exhibits will be invited to display works alongside those of resident artists Rena Brouwer, Terry Lacy, and Alan McConnell.

Peterson and May will join the Gallery's resident artists at the opening reception from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5. The Opera House Gallery is located at 109 S. Washington Street on the east side of the Courthouse Square in Delphi. The evening will also signal the start of holiday hours at the Opera House Gallery which will have extended hours from noon until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays and Friday from noon until 6:00 p.m. Regular hours on Saturday are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 4:00 p.m.

Rena Brouwer  Slideshow

A free-spirited artist, Rena's involvement with the arts has been diverse over the past thirty years. She was a corporate visual merchandiser, taught watercolors at national conventions and has been involved in promoting the arts by serving on numerous state and national boards. Rena now lives in rural Indiana. Daily she paints watercolors inspired by wildlife, nature's bounty and Wildcat Creek. Her oneness with her surroundings is reflected in her images and the strokes of her brush reveal the light, texture and color of her milieu.
Terry Lacy has been working as an
artist doing plein-air landscapes
for over 40 years. His creative work
also includes hand made paper compositions of the American rural landscape and other natural subject matter. Terry is also a seasoned illustrator and designer working on editorial, exhibit and print communication projects.

Alan McConnell Slideshow

Alan McConnell is a landscape and nature photographer. He has traveled and photographed extensively through the western U.S. and elsewhere. The focus of his work is the color photographic print. Being also a science educator, Alan hopes to share his visions of the beautiful and interesting features that nature provides. "What comes to mind when you hear the wind blowing through a pine tree or smell the air after a cleansing rain? A well-known speaker once stated that a good teacher is a good storyteller. My intentions are to tell a story with my photographs."
The purpose of the Opera House Gallery is to showcase resident artists while celebrating the cultural and architectural heritage of the community. A portion of all gallery sales will support the restoration of the Delphi Opera House as a performing arts center for Delphi and the surrounding area.
